Fluid Station MATH 1.2: Mechanical Systems in Health

Properties of Matter: Volume, Mass, and Density

Volume mass

  1. Module Goal:  To measure quantities among different types of matter.
  2. Materials Required: Computer with fast Internet connectivity
  3. Applied Objectives: In completing this unit, you will -
    • Define and list types of matter
    • Define VOLUME
    • Measure 2- and 3-dimensional images or objects in metric and English systems
    • Measure liquid volume in metric and English systems
    • Convert measurements between metric and English systems
      Define mass
    • Measure mass using metric and English units
    • Convert units of mass
      Compare mass and weight
    • Define Density
    • Apply density formulas
    • Solve problems related to measuring matter
  4. Pre-requisite knowledge: 6th-grade reading level and arithmetic skills.
  5. Applied Terminology: All terminology for this module is covered in the PowerPoint presentation
  6. Evaluation: Projects submitted in this module will be evaluated by rubrics, quizzes, or completion. A rubric is a table that shows you what you are being graded on. A rubric states exactly what is expected of you at different levels. CLICK HERE to find the rubric for assignments in this module.

Reflect on What You Know

Matter makes up everything that you see, touch, or can measure in the world. Fluid is matter. Air is matter. Your body is made up of matter. In the lab for this station, you worked a lot with fluid. You evaluated and calculated the density of two fluids of different concentrations, and completed the general procedure for IV placement and fluid administration. You worked with matter in liquid form.

Consider what other types of matter exist. Make a list and discuss it with others in your program.

In this module, you will measure different properties of matter, both in the metric system and the US English system. The metric system is used all over the world, and it is a common way to measure different quantities in medicine.

Introduction to Matter

BEFORE YOU START – Print the following worksheets. You will fill out the Lesson Answer Sheet as you go through the presentation and are asked to complete practice problems. The next four worksheets are to be completed for the “Review and Practice” at the end of the PowerPoint:

Now open open the Fluid Station Math 1.2 PowerPoint presentation, Properties of Matter, from the link below. Examine and reflect on the information on each slide and complete the activities. At the end, complete and turn in your handouts to your coach.

Properties of Matter Power Point

After you have completed the PowerPoint, Lesson Answer Sheet, and all four worksheets, print out and complete the quiz:
